Perhaps one of my favourite songs (yes, I’m a little bit eighties tragic) is Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. It’s always been a great morale booster for me, and it just sounds great.
Consistently picked as one of the most motivational songs of all time, it’s a popular one. It’s even played by Reed College every hour, on the hour during finals week.
So then, if it’s so motivational, is it a wonder that it’s bundled into almost every conceivable activity and sold as “team-building”? Probably not, but I have to say that just playing Eye of the Tiger while people are making sandcastles or playing with playdough doesn’t build teams.
I’m not saying a great soundtrack can’t help your team building program. It can, and is probably a necessity. Ultimately, though, you must have relevance. Team building is about helping team members work together to meet common goals. It’s not a simple as licensing a single track.
