Coaching is vital to reaching your business goals. It allows your staff to develop, and as a consequence your business can develop. There are certain situations in which coaching really excels, and really must be employed.
One such situation, perhaps the most rewarding, is that of the talent or skills shortage. When talent is not available, or commands a huge premium, coaching your internal staff can allow you fill more specialised roles. It’s a great way to expand the skills of your workforce in general.
Another important time for coaching is during times of organisational change. Coaching is then used as a tool to craft the existing workforce to meet the new, changing work requirements. It’s a different angle from the more proactive developmental consulting, but it’s the same concept.
The third most important scenario is that of poor performing employees. I’m not usually one to focusing too much on improving poor performance, it’s usually better to focus on improving the good – it achieves more. However, poor work performance is an ideal time for coaching, just don’t let it get out of hand. It needs to be timely, and it needs to be based around clearly articulated performance goals.
There are many, many more scenarios where coaching can be utilised, but those are my top three. As always feel free to contact me if you think coaching might benefit your organisation.
