People have often spoke of reaching an “escape velocity”, in terms of things like business growth and career development. I like to think of it as “orbital velocity”, as I think it’s a better fit. The term “escape velocity” implies an ever increasing speed, until some point of escape. On the other hand, “orbital velocity” indicates the perfect speed at which minimum effort is expended to obtain the maximum result.
Everybody has an optimal speed. A point at which their progress is at its most efficient and effective. This applies to all aspects of life, business or otherwise. Operate at any other speed, and you’re losing a degree of efficiency, and outcomes may not be as effective.
Take career and professional development, for example. It often seems difficult to get started, but when you’ve gotten up to speed it’s easiest to stay there. You develop habits that make it simple, habits that mean you develop at an optimal rate. Any slower and you’d lose momentum. Any faster and you won’t be paying enough attention to truly develop to your maximum ability. It’s a delicate balance.
The same concept applies to any tasks or skills. Gardening, renovating your house, repairing your car. Experiment, and find your “orbital velocity”, you’ll be glad you did.
